]]> Tue, 21 Jan 2025 13:49:00 GMT Equitable Foundation Helping Students and Removing Barriers https://asbo.org/news/news.asp?id=689360 https://asbo.org/news/news.asp?id=689360 Equitable Foundation places a strong emphasis on helping students remove barriers and obtain postsecondary access. They believe that obtaining a college degree can improve social and economic mobility for underrepresented students. Not only do they aim to support students to and through their college endeavors, but one of their key focus areas is centered around breaking down barriers within the college application process. In 2023, they supported over 5,000 students through FAFSA assistance, college tour opportunities and leadership and development curriculum.

Additional resources include:

  • Equitable Foundation’s marquee program, Equitable Excellence Scholarship® strives to address similar key themes in the college access space. In the spring, the 2025 scholarship cohort will be announced and our recipients will receive recurring scholarships of $5,000 for up to four years, totaling $20,000. The application period is now open. We encourage high school seniors with at least a 2.5 GPA, planning to attend a 2-or 4-year college in the U.S. next fall to apply via our electronic application before the deadline on December 18th.

  • Equitable has partnered with Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD) to offer a turnkey program centered around “How to Pay for College.” This suite of materials includes an easy step-by-step guide to FAFSA completion and a presentation that provides students with the tools for financial aid.
  • Equitable has partnered with National College Attainment Network (NCAN), a nonprofit membership and advocacy association whose mission is to support members and influence leaders, organizations, policies, and systems across the country to increase equity and excellence in postsecondary degree access and attainment. Through their partnership they aim to shed light on the importance of FAFSA completion and advocate to remove barriers within the college application process.

]]> Tue, 17 Dec 2024 05:00:00 GMT FTC Takes Action Against Evolv Technologies for Deceiving Users About its AI-Powered Security Scr... https://asbo.org/news/news.asp?id=688282 https://asbo.org/news/news.asp?id=688282 Maryland Center for School Safety shared the following information with MD ASBO:

"Those who have purchased Evolv systems or are considering doing so should read through this FTC order."

This may be of interest to systems that currently use or may be considering Evolv. The FTC alleged that Evolv made misleading claims (deceptive marketing) about the effectiveness and performance of its WDS. Evolv does not admit or deny these allegations but agreed to the stipulated terms of the order. 
 
You can read the stipulated order here:
  • Evolv is permanently restrained from making false or unsupported claims about the functionality, accuracy, or characteristics of its products (e.g., weapons detection and false alarm rates).
  • Evolv is not required to conduct an independent evaluation of their system but any claims must now be backed by competent and reliable evidence.
  • Evolv customers* (some) have the right to cancel contracts made between April 2022 and June 2023.
* "Customers means school(s) or school district(s) in the K-12 range that purchased or otherwise contracted for the use of Evolv Express between the period April 1, 2022, to June 30, 2023. Excluded from this definition is any school or school district that: (1) participated in a pilot program of at least 30 days prior to such purchase or contract; (2) purchased 15 or more Evolv Express units; or (3) purchased or contracted for, and deployed, additional Evolv Express units more than 45 days after initially deploying Evolv Express at a school."
