    New ASBO MD&DC Scholarship Opportunity for School Safety & Security Personnel


    Following up with the theme of Safety and Security from our Fall Conference, ASBO MD&DC is excited to announce a new scholarship named after the daughter of our Fall Conference Keynote Speaker, Michele Gay - the "Josephine Gay Scholarship." The Josephine Gay Scholarship honors not only the memory of Josephine, a victim of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting, but also the work of her mother Michele and her efforts to improve school safety. The Scholarship will provide complimentary registration, lodging and travel for one ASBO member who is involved in their district's Safety & Security or Risk Management departments, to attend the inaugural National School Safety Summit. The Summit is being held in Houston, TX, March 28-30, 2019. 

    Eligibility requirements and application details are:


    • Applicant must be a current member of ASBO MD&DC.
    • Be employed as a full-time school business employee of a Maryland or District of Columbia school district, in a content area that is at least 50% dedicated to school safety and/or security. ASBO MD&DC recognizes some smaller districts do not have a dedicated full-time person for the position of Safety Officer. The person serving in this role may also serve in another capacity, while still serving as the schools primary Safety Officer.


    Submit a 1-2-page description of the following to the Executive Director at

    • Describe your role in school safety at your school district. Include your job title, and the duties specific to school safety and/or security.
    • Describe the goals you have for your school district as it relates to school safety and security.
    • Describe how award of this scholarship will help you achieve these goals.


    The Evaluation Committee will consist of the Executive Director, Awards Committee Chair, two Directors-at-Large.  Applications are due to the Executive Director by close of business February 1, 2019. The Committee will notify the recipient of the award by February 8, 2019.
