    To:  ALL Maryland LEA’s:

During the ASBO Safety & Security Conference on Nov 2 in Linthicum, a panel of facilities experts, which included the State Fire Marshal’s Office and the Center for MD Public School Safety (The Center), shared information regarding the only State approved locking mechanism for K-12 facilities. The goal was to ensure that all LEA’s were informed and did not circumvent code while performing security upgrades.

As a follow-up to that discussion, attached is the original design criteria for the only type of approved lock.  A specific model is not referenced, however, with all the criteria referenced, the type of lock permitted is limited.  Also attached is a photo, presented by The Center, of a locking system that meets these criteria/code requirements.

Please contact Harry Bradley, State Fire Marshal’s Office or Dino Pignataro, The Center for MD Public School Safety, if you need additional information. They are copied on this email.

Further, this is a link to the ASBO Newsletter that references other safety and security considerations that the panel discussed at the conference.

Safety is everybody’s business and this is our attempt at helping LEA’s comply with code, while keeping our schools safe.
