Foundations of Maryland School Business Management

    Government Fund Accounting for Maryland Public Schools

    This workshop was established for all school business officials, for aspiring leaders in schools and support services, bookkeepers and new employees engaged in the accounting or bookkeeping activities including decision making of those activities and need a working knowledge of the rules, principles, and procedures for governmental accounting as it applies to Maryland Local Education Agencies.

    Attendees will benefit by gaining an understanding of Budgeting and Financial Planning, Accounting, Auditing, and Financial Reporting, Cash Management, Debt Management, and Technology for School Finance Operations for Maryland School Districts.

    Students will be able to demonstrate the ability to:
    • Apply multiple techniques for identifying expenditures across cost centers and programs;
    • Use an internal and external auditor;
    • Prepare, analyze, and report financial statements and support documents to the board of education periodically;
    • Use information conveyed in the annual audit report to improve financial tracking and reporting and internal controls;
    • Apply concepts and standards of accounting, the Governmental Accounting Standards Board (GASB), and generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP), along with other standards applicable to a school disctrict;
    • Report the financial status of the district to the appropriate state/provincial agency;
    • Prepare a cash flow analysis, including a fund balance report, for the board of education;
    • Keep current with technology applications and programs;
    • Assist in the development and implementation of technology in the business office and the classroom environment;
    • Maintain a working knowledge of the technology and software that is available for school and business office use;
    • Evaluate and apply various technology tools for use in the school and business office
    • Ensure cash handling procedures and effective internal controls.

    Cancellation Policy: You may cancel your registration for a full refund by notifying our office in writing no later than 14 days prior to the date of the event.
    You may substitute an attendee in your place by notifying us prior to the event or onsite. Any non-member replacing a member registration will be invoiced for the balance due. Balance cannot be carried over to other ASBO Conferences or Events.

    ASBO reserves the right to cancel or re-schedule any Foundations Course that does not exceed 10 registrants. Registrants will be notified no less than 14 days prior to the course should this occur.
